Carl Schumann
President
Carl is in his second year at King's reading Political Economy. He enjoys white wines from Germany and Austria, red wines from Italy, and a good bottle of port but hopes that the society will broaden his knowledge of other wine-regions. After the society ceased operating throughout the pandemic, Carl's goal is to build on the success and work of previous committees to stimulate a community of wine enthusiasts from all parts of the University that doesn't only provide opportunities to taste and learn about exceptional wines and their origin but also a unique space for students from different degrees (and universities) to meet around this common interest.
Angèle Rougeot Subtil
VP & Events Officer
Angèle is a third-year History and International Relations student. She grew up in Beaune, Burgundy (France) and therefore is a fervent advocate for wines from the region. Although she is mostly used to French wine she is enthusiastic about red Italian wine. With the society, she wishes to expand her knowledge and explore new horizons with other passionate students. Angèle has a vision for the society that is all about providing an inclusive opportunity to step into the world of wine. She firmly believes that wine is first and foremost about sharing and wants to create opportunity for networking, meeting other wine enthusiasts, and of course tasting!
David Williams
Treasurer
David is a third year PhD student within the departments of History and War Studies. His research is broadly on visual culture and discourse analysis, and national identity, nationalism and patriotism. Having grown up in sunny warm and wine growing California, he decided to make his was to the beautiful weather and the UK. Growing up, wine was something both had at most meals on the cheap, but also at times something to enjoy, savour and experience. As the bedrock to his relationship with wine, it speaks to his wider view of wine and wine tasting. David firmly believes that wine should first and foremost be about sharing, conversation, and enjoyment reflected and experiences uniquely by each person. To this end, wine should not be the reserve of stuffiness, but merely another facet in the human delight in flavours, smells and tastes. As such, he wishes to make sure the society is a place for people to come together, talk, learn, share, not just about wine but all interests. David is patrial to Sicilian and Greek reds but is most passionate about trying wines from regions outside of the typical and popular regions.
